Default As a European

Mr. Obama's victory was a huge Copernican revolution with regard to the world's perception of America. I see my friends talking about America in a whole new light. It's amazing how much damage W. had caused to his country. I think that choosing Obama was absolutely the best possible choice America could have made, even if it had had 1000 candidates.

Some Europeans are still skeptical. They say that Obama will actually change nothing and that this is all a show in order to get people to like America again. Well, I can agree that he won't be able to do absolutely everything he wants, but even if this victory is symbolic, symbols are also important. This victory is great news for the world, but most of all, it is great news for America.

I agree that Obama will not be able to change everything, but he is already looking to reverse many of Bush's more damaging legislation, including on Stem Cell research, so I think that's a good sign. I think his immediate search for his cabinet members, and a call to Bush to start things rolling now, is also a good sign. He seems committed to fulfilling all the promises he can.

As for his image abroad, I know that one of the reasons I voted for him (among many) was because of our damaged relations with the rest of the world, especially Europe. I think foreign policy is a very important topic in any campaign, and he focused on it much more then McCain. I think that showed the stark differences between the two: Obama was concerned about it, McCain was for more isolation.
