We urgently need to change our policy towards energy self-sufficiency and resume exploring the oil in our own homeland.
Why should we depend on middle-east for all those gasoline when our country ourselves have it in ample? Environmentalists have long hijacked this issue and have made us suffer at the expense of gulf countries who are carrying away our billions of dollars. Energy self-sufficiency is very vital for our economy. It needs to be examined whether the present down-turn in our economy has been aggravated by the huge rise in prices of oil that was seen couple of months back. I am sure the answer would be in the affirmative since huge prices must have forced our companies to cut back on many expenses and expansions resulting in falling of over all demand, the main ingredient which would have back-tracked the economy. Well, one of the problems in the US trying to be oil self-sufficient would be that there simply is not that much oil on US land. There used to be some, but they pretty much drained those in the lats 1800's and the earliy 1900's. I'm sure if there was still oil left, companies would be jumping all over those. Nobody likes giving so much money to foreign countries.

We have oil availible to us all over the place. Offshore drilling has been an option for close to a decade and possibly more know. Also, we have Alaska and the entire ANWAR area that is open to oil exploration. We really need a leader who will allow us to explore this area.

You hit the nail on the head....flaco.
Off-shore drilling has to be permitted and should be undertaken vigorously to compensate for the inactivity in this field for a very long time. There is very serious mis-match between demand and supply and this problem needs urgent government attention. Regards, Right |

The problem with the government reacting to anything that needs to be taken seriously or quickly is that it moves too slowly. Private business should just be allowed to choose where to drill and this should be one of the places put on the list, they want profits come and get the profits!

Yes, I suppose off short drilling can be feasible, but drilling in the middle of the ocean really isn't environmentally friendly, and even then, the oil there won't last very long, so the only long term option is to research alternative energy sources.

I could not agree with you more. The need of the hour is not to rely on other countries for the our oil requirements. It is important that we find new oil exporation sites which will help in reducing our reliance on other countries. We can also enter into very long term import contracts which will help in reducing the loss caused due to eratic oil prices.
